General Overview.

The Sarutobi clan (猿飛一族, Sarutobi Ichizoku) is an influential clan from Konohagakure. It has produced several notable members who have held positions of high authority, such as Hokage, and even a Feudal Lord, not to mention membership in the Twelve Guardian Ninja. All known members have also been observed devotees of the Will of Fire. The Sarutobi clan is one of the four noble clans within Kirigakure, due to its long time village membership, joining the village in its formation periods, and continuing to provide positive support. Shinobi of the clan are well regarded individuals, though the clan takes a very humble position in most affairs, not claiming to be fancy or better than any other. It should be noted that it was Sasuke Sarutobi's words which founded the Will of Fire, a theme of peace and passion which has governed Konoha into the great village it is today.

Due to a series of historical events, the Sarutobi was a major factor in both the creation, formation, and installation of all Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi clans into Konohagakure. As such, it is a long going tradition for Yamanaka, Nara, and Akimichi students to be given a Sarutobi's set of earrings, to represent a full unity of all four clans. Beyond this, however, the tradition goes on to have these three students trained by a Sarutobi mentor. This is not a binding tradition, however, and there certainly are many exceptions. In fact, as time has continued on, the tradition has become more and more rare, though it is revered as one of Konoha's strongest team formations to date, and rightly so.

As the Sarutobi clan was never the host of a Kekkei Genkai, nor the exclusive holders of any particular Hījutsu, it was forced to mark its territory in a more traditional means. Because of this, the clan developed incredible battle formation, and harbored a real mastery over what now is known as basic ninjutsu. In fact, most of Konohagakure's more common ninjutsu were derived from the Sarutobi's personal arsenal, including the fireball, in large part. Ninja born into this family are strong individuals, in good health, but beyond this, they are known to excel in the ninja world. Because of their clan's particular strength in basic ninjutsu, they are able to acquire the clan's jutsu without paying for it in experience points. This means that, when a shinobi advances to the level required for the technique, they are able to automatically add it to their application free of charge; genin applicants are able to use all of the clan's jutsu free of charge. It should be noted that while civilian Sarutobi clan members are unable to perform standard ninjutsu to a shinobi's level, or even close, they can develop a C rank ability in one skill area on the skill sheet. This could include a C rank level in speed, strength, ninjutsu, weaponry, etc. A maximum of one skill is permitted to be advanced, and the skill starts at zero upon character creation [of a civilian].
